Rose hurt his knee on Friday night in the Bulls' game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Cutting down the right sideline, Rose was reaching for a backdoor pass when he was injured.

At the time of the injury, Rose immediately limped toward the bench and did not return to the game. He left Portland's Moda Center on crutches that night.

Rose's decision to have the medial meniscus reattached is a long-term approach that requires a longer rehab time. Officially out of the season, Rose has now played only 50 games in the past three years. He dealt with small injuries through most of 2011-12 before suffering the ACL injury and missed all of last year. He played only 10 games this season before suffering this most recent injury.

Without Rose, the Bulls should be able to contend with the lower-tier teams in the East, but all hopes of challenging the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers is essentially lost. When Rose returns, he could come back to a different time, since his injury has accelerated the Bulls' plan to attempt to trade forward Luol Deng, who becomes a free agent this summer.
Before the Bulls' Sunday loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Bulls coach Tom Thiboideau said he believed the team still had enough to win. In the backcourt, they will play Kirk Hinrich and Marquis Teague in Rose's place.

Rose averaged 15.9 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds before suffering a season-ending injury.
