Join the Schomburg today and you can PRE-REGISTER to attend the only New York showing of Lincoln's handwritten draft along side the final version of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Dear Friend,

September 22 marks the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's executive order ending slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation. In celebration of this event, the Schomburg Center is pleased to host The First Step to Freedom, an exhibit featuring the original handwritten draft by President Lincoln, as well as the final document. Please note that the only New York stop of the exhibit is at the Schomburg Center from September 21-24.

We have a special offer for you: become a Friend of the Schomburg today for as little as $35 and you can PRE-REGISTER with a guest to attend this historic exhibition.

Members of The Schomburg Society, led by our National Chair Dr. Maya Angelou, support the core mission of this esteemed research library: collecting, preserving and teaching African-American history and culture. Our pursuit of historical literacy includes sharing the incredible stories of sacrifice and achievement by people of color that textbooks and popular culture prefer to ignore or distort.

Ask yourself - do you want the entire truth about African-American history and culture to be collected and preserved? Or, are you satisfied with your children and their children learning only what a publisher in Chicago or a school board in Texas wants them to learn? Become a member of the Schomburg today for as little as $35 and, with your generous, tax-deductible donation, you will help continue to empower the truth about the black experience in America and around the world. Join us today!
